This project proposes the revitalization of an underlit and environmentally degraded riverside greenspace along the Gapcheon Stream in Daejeon, Korea. The primary objective is to improve nighttime safety, accessibility, and usability by introducing a lighting-based public design intervention that transforms the site into an active civic space.

The design concept, “Deep Sea,” draws an analogy between the darkened condition of the river corridor and the depths of the ocean. Inspired by the bioluminescence of deep-sea organisms, the project employs illuminated installations and spatial sequencing to create points of visual interest and orientation within the landscape. Through this approach, the river is reimagined as a luminous public environment—one that enhances both ecological perception and user experience after dark.
